I first heard this song performed by Jeff Buckley and thought, wow, that kid did not write this and I went in search of who did. I instantly wondered where I'd been all my life not to have heard of Leonard Cohen. The man is a genius with lyrics. Listen carefully. It's not about religion at all. But what beautiful poetry. I think I have a crush on Leonard.
Here's the Jeff Buckley cover.
I love this song. Jason Wade (of Lifehouse) did a cover of it for the first Shrek movie and I just fell in love with it. Coincidentally that movie was what convinced me to try my hand at romance writing. LOL.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite song of all time, but I still find Jeff's version more... haunting, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI've heard this sung by a number of different people; it is a beautiful song. I do like the way Brooke described it. Thanks for letting us know the original author!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great movie to study for romance writing.
ReplyDeleteInitially, I preferred the Jeff Buckley version too, but the more I listen to Leonard the more I appreciate the wisdom, intelligence and experience in his voice.
ReplyDeleteA crush indeed. :) That man has a serious way with words. His voice mirrors the depth of the lyrics.
