I live in the Cutting Horse Capital of the World. I never thought much about the duallys and horse trailers that make up 80% of the vehicles in my hometown. Nor all the Cattle Dogs and Australian Shepherds raised around here. It's just part of the landscape, but when my editor suggested I write about cowboys, turning to cutting horses was the natural thing. After all, in order to do research, I simply had to walk outside my front door.
But, as I've talked to readers about cutting horse cowboys, I've discovered most people don't know what a cutting horse is. So I'm sharing a YouTube video that shows them in action. Cutting horses are special. Not just any horse can be trained to do this. They have to have a natural instinct for it.
Look for my Jubilee, Texas series about cutting horse cowboys coming from Avon Books in 2012.
When I was reading your post, I thought they were referred to as "Cutting Horse Cowboys" because of the town or ranch they were from. After watching the video all I can say is "Wow!" The skill and talent involved here is amazing. My heart caught in my throat a couple times when I thought the horse and rider were going to go down. It is impressing to see the horse and rider's quick reaction and response to the cattle's movement. Again I say "Wow!" The Cutting Horse Cowboys are amazing and will definitely make for an exciting story.
ReplyDeleteIt's thrilling to watch in person and once you ride a cutting horse you're a gonner. The horses are just as much athletes as a boxer or football player. They're amazing animals.
ReplyDeleteThis was so fasinating to watch.. Those horses and riders were amazing.. quite a dance they do...
ReplyDeleteIt's a thing of beauty to watch! You said the horse must have a natural instinct to be a cutting horse. Looks like the riders need that same instinct and become one with the horse!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the Jubilee, Texas series.
It's the riders job to direct the horses without getting in their way.
